You must know, WHAT you need (and how often!) ... or if your father is Rockefeller, you can buy Canon 50mm/1.2

I like Canon 50/1.8 II - it's a good lens - Sigmas I have enough (also fine)

Na, wooooo? in TIROL - wo sonst? :-))))

DonalDuc: would you recommend an extension tube for the 50mm f1.8 to get close macros on a 550D body?

If you use cheap ---> macro tubes you cannot use aperture with 50mm/1.8 II (also with other Canon lenses).

Either you buy a $ 99.99 zoom tube with contacs or you use the cheap tubes with a manual lens with aperture.
Or you use automatic tubes > $100

Cheapest (and best?) are macro lenses.

$ 6.85 (incl shipping)

automatic tubes, > $100

$ 6.85 tubes + manual lens
