For outdoor sports, the Canon 70-300 IS USM would be a good choice. If the basketball goes indoors, you'll need something much faster.

For bugs, you'll want a long lens, so you're further away and don't frighten them. The Canon 70-300 IS USM is a 1:2 macro lens which should work well for that as well.

As shoturtle said, the kit lens would work ok for that. and there are wider lenses but they're expensive.

What's the difference between grey market and a regular lens?

The companies that import things into the US frequently have exclusive right to import those items, and can refuse warranty service on items that they did not import. Canon USA, for instance, has the exclusive right to import products manufactured by Canon (Japan). A "gray market" item took a more circuitous route to get into this country, it's parenthood is uncertain, and whether it has received adequate care and handling is in doubt.

If it works for you, you've saved some money. If you have a problem, you're usually on your own.

Are there any other lenses like the 70-300mm that Canon makes? Or are the Tamron/Sigma lenses ok?

The canon ef 70-300mm is better then the tamron and the base sigma. Not to sure how the mid grade sigma 70-300mm OS compares, not to many reviews on it.

For shooting football, Canon makes some better lenses, but they're more expensive. If you want to spend less than what the Canon 70-300 IS USM costs, the Tamron Di LD or the Sigma 70-300 APO are your best bet, but they aren't as good as the Canon IS USM.

awesome, thanks again TCav. Looks like I'll be sticking with the Canon. I don't want to have to buy another lens down the road unless I'm getting paid to take photos.
