Using all of the AF points would certainly explain the focus issues I have read about. At this time, I am not able to upgrade my camera body (although looking at the options, I would really LOVE to). I am going to invest in the 85mm lens knowing that I will still be able to use it in the future when I am able to upgrade the body. I will also get some noise reduction software.

My kid dances again this weekend. I will use all of your suggestions and see what I am able to get. She's dancing in a theatre I am not familiar with but the no flash rule still applies.

Thank you!

Can you use a low tripod or a Monopod to steady your shot without irratating those around you?

That still wouldn't let her use the faster shutter speeds needed to prevent motion blur due to subject movement. It would just let her use slower shutter speeds without getting motion blur due to camera shake.
