Default 15mm vs 17mm on crop body - extra 2mm worth it?

Hey folks,

Well I really want the 10-22mm from Canon but it's like 4x my budget, so I have to make a compromise and can't choose between the two lenses below:

Sigma 15-30mm 3.5-4.5 120-200
Sigma 17-35mm 2.8-4.0 130

The 17mm is at a fixed price and I could buy it right now, however I would prefer the 15mm because of the greater FOV... what I want to know is what difference these 2mm make to the FOV on a 1.6 crop body and is it really worth all the fuss!

The 15-30 is actually a much better lens...
(but it does not have HSM)

-> It was THE lens to get in the film days (especially on Nikon bodies):

The tiny extra 2mm makes a lot of difference in a WA, but it'll also be more sensitive to stray light because of its extra large FOV!

I didnt realise the optical quality of the 15-30 is considered better - a helpful pointer, thanks NHL!

Just bagged a mint condition Sigma 15-30mm on ebay for 145, and it looks like my 28mm f/1.8 is going to sell for 200 which is great (it's worth every darn penny lol!).

Lens will hopefully arrive on Tuesday - I'm excited and will post sample pictures as soon as it arrives!!

This might sound ridiculous but I got my 15-30mm yesterday and am very disappointed with it. The FOV on the Canon body virtually matches the FOV I got with my 18-105mm on my Nikon D90, and I had hoped that the few millimetres difference would account for something. It's a nice lens, but unfortunately the compromise just isn't good enough...

Suffice to say, I'm going to sell the 15-30mm and get an ultra wide; I simply won't be happy until I get one. Candidates are:
  • Sigma 10-20mm 300
  • Tokina 12-24mm 300
Need to have a hard think about this because 300 is a lot of money for one lens, and 150 is a heck of a lot of money for an extra 3-5mm of wide angle...

tokina 11-16mm 2.8 would be my pick for ultrawide. Or the sigma 10-20mm is another option.

The 28mm 1.8 would be a lens I would have kept for a crop body canon. It is pretty close to a 50mm on a ff body, close to eye prospective. And makes a heck of a good low light lens, that focuses fast with no hunting.

I agree on both counts, however the 11-16mm is rarely sold on (presumably because nobody wants to part with it!) and generally sells for 450-500 new... far too much for me, unfortunately!

I have to sell the 28mm to fund the ultra wide but I don't mind!!

Problem for me at the moment is money, so I have to sell to buy. But it's no problem

*Just got the 10-20mm f/4-5.6, it will arrive tomorrow. Now that's what I'm talkin about
