I'm interested to see how much that 'L' in the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM costs. The current but seemingly dscontinued non-L EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM sells for ~$530.

$1500 for the 70-300mm L according to the Bob Atkins site. Not a bargain as the apparantly discontinued 70-300mm IS USM was often considered to have "near L optical quality" for not much more than 1/3 the cost of the new lens.

If it'll cost 1500$ it must be real good because the 100-400L will be just slightly more expensive...

Some MTFs...

70-300mm f/4 IS USM:

The new 70-300mm f/4L IS USM

70-200mm f/4L IS USM:

Compared to the 70-200mm f/4L IS USM, the price of 1500$ comprehensible, isn't it?
