Like you I was lucky to get a 500 f/4 when it was still affordable... The new one has an MSRP of $9k
I am not sure 9k will find any buyers. The used price of the 500 still hovers around 5500 and the new ones at around 6500. i expect to see the 500 around 6500-7000 and not around 9K.

Bit of a bummer really, I remember when the 600 f/4 ran in the 8k-9k range, now the 500 is passing that.
Now I am ticked I passed up a chance to get an old beat up but working fine 600 f/4 for 3000$ last year.

Maybe a good thing to come out of this is only really serious (and well off) amateurs and pros will be able to shell out this kind of cash for high end lenses. Sort of get an edge back from the 50 million others with DSLR's out there.
A new generation 1ds and 500 or 600 lens would have paid for the first house I bought in the 70's (man I feel really old saying that!)

As long as the old generation 500 and 600 stay within 5000 USD we shouldnt worry as the old 500-600 were and are fantastic on their own level.
