Default Sports zoom

So this year I have been shooting my daughter's soccer games (with very mixed results). During the season I have tried to make myself shoot with my EF 300 F4, but I just can't! I do not have the skill, patience, whatever to get the shots I want with it and find myself using my 70-200 F2.8. I know based on the shots that it is just not long enough, even at this level for my needs. I even tried a 1.4 TC on it with horrible results. Now I would love a Sigma 120-300 F2.8, but the resulting divorce would be costly. So I am looking at two options, now take into account that I am shooting daylight games at this point. The first option is the SIgma 100-300 F4, now that I have have micro adjust, I am no longer terrified of SIgma. The second is the Canon 100-400 F4.5-5.6, yes it is a slow lens, but has a great reputation. If there is another option, please feel free to add it. I am now shooting a 7D. thanks, Steven

sigma has a 120-300mm 2.8 HSM lens, could be a good lens for the indoor sports is you can not get to close.

But I would go with the 100-400L if you are not shooting indoors.

The sigma 100-300 is a sharp lens. So is the canon 100-400. I use the 100-400 for wildlife shooting, but I'm not a big fan of it for sports. The 5.6 aperture is very limiting - especially at the cost. The sigma is, IMO, a much better bargain at $1100 vs. $1600 for the canon. You can still use a TC on the 100-300, then take it off when light gets lower. If the canon were less expsensive it would be easier to recommend. But $1600 for an f5.6 sports lens just doesn't make much sense to me.

There have been reports that Sigma discontinued the 100-300/4.0. If you see one, you may want to jump on it.

Yep, the Sigma 100-300 is out of production it was a great lens and worth getting if you spot one for sale. The 120-300mm f2.8 is my choice (wasn't married when I bought it) but like you say it is not cheap. I've used the 100-400 Canon and found it pretty good, not ideal as DOF wasn't as shallow and getting light into it is harder. I've also not had many issues with the 70-200 and a 1.4x TC, even wide open so possibly there is something up (used the latter with my 1DmkIII and 7D).

Thanks Guys, I appreciate the input. Yeah the 100-400 at F5.6 is slow. Mark, my TC experience was with my T2i and they were really (extreamly) soft (read OOF), I have not tried it yet with the 7D (arrived last night). Well, we shall see what Santa brings . Steven

Could well have been that the lens combo including the TC was making a little front of back focused, you can easily correct that with the 7D. Still not such a good solution but I was just surprised it was so bad.

The 120-300 f/2.8 is updated with IS so some folks might be getting rid of their non-IS...
-> Something to watch out for also in the used market since you won't be needing it for sport

The 120-300 f/2.8 (NON IS) has been discontinued by Sigma.
Bit of a disapointment really, it is one of my favourite lenses, glad I obtained one before it went away

Though now the 120-300 f/2.8 with IS is tantalizing (arguh)
Wonder how the IS will affect its cost, just before being dropped the old version was going for 3700$ in Canada.

Long live the 120-300 f/2.8
