Default Lens Sharpness

Recent owner of Digital Rebel. I haven't used SLR for a number of years (like 10), so all the lenses are new to me. I bought the Canon 75-300 USM. It seems the zoom I use, the less sharp the photos. I use a very good tripod and high DOF, but results are somewhat less that I'm expecting or hoping.

Am I in the wrong lense range, need to spend more for a good one, or is it possibly a faulty lens?

Any one with similar problems?

I have heard others complain of softness at the upper end of the zoom range for that lens. I have a 75-300 IS and haven't noticed this. True, it's not as sharp as an L lens, but it cost 1/4 the price.
