Default all around lens

I've decided to nix the Tokina idea--too many widely divergent and inconsistent reviews. I ordered the Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. 24-85 range and aperture limits look good for a general purpose camera. 24 is good enough for a landscapes--I'm counting on much less of a distortion than with the kit lens which was very obvious at 18mm. And 85mm is also good enough for a zoom. I can always clip on my 55-200mm when I need to. I mentioned the 50mm f/1.8 just to compare all around picture quality to the kit lense, which does not compare. I hope that 24-85 comes closer to the 50mm in terms of quality than the kit lens, otherwise back it goes.
