Default Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Is this a good lens? I understand that this is subjective. I am new to digital and have not purchased a camera as yet. Looking at maybe a 10d or its replacement around Feb of 2004 of course money is important to me. but what is the quality. I'm also thinking of the 70-200f/4 Canon, due to cost it will be one or the other :?:

Here are reviews of each...

70-200

I'd get the 70-200, but landscapes are the blurry stuff behind the sports action to me...

Default 24-85

I had the 24-85 for a couple of months. I found it a very good day-to-day lens. Color, contrast and consistency were better than the 18-55 kit lens and sharpness was on par with the 18-55.

I recently sold the 24-85 as I bought the 24-70 L. After having the much more expensive 24-70 L, I must admit, I miss the 24-85. I have sharpness issues with the 24-70 L--not that it's any less sharp than the 24-85--it's not. But at $1100 versus the $300 for the 24-85, and the extra weight and girth of the the 24-70 L, I was expecting a much more obvious improvement.

If you haven't done so already, buy the 50mm f/1.8. It's only $70 but the photo quality improvement over the 24-85 and 24-70 L is very obvious right off the bat. Best lens investment I ever made.

I got the 24-85 USM a couple of months ago and I am very pleased with it. This pic was taken with it on a D30.

Default 24-85

I missed my 24-85 so much that I went out and bought another from EBAY. Yes, I sold my 24-85 on EBAY about a month before. But since my 24-70 L has been just a torture (I have sent it back to Canon 3 times) that I needed a nice, reliable, everyday lens. I am happy having a 24-85 again.

You folks should post some aviation-related photos sometime I love planes and flying (a hobby). Still going after that pilots license.
