Default Canon EF 70-300 non-L, non-DO

Hi.

Has anyone used (and/or compared) any of these lenses:

Canon 70-300 IS non-L, non-DO
Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD MACRO
Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro

Which one is better?

I have used the Canon 70-300mm IS USM lens for a number of years. It is reliable and solidly built, especially for a non-pro lens. Compared to my 100-400mm lens, it is light and easy to carry. Image quality is considered quite good, in fact Popular Photography tested the 70-300mm L lens and found it less sharp at 300mm than the non-L 30-300mm IS. The IS is good for 2-3 stops extra hand holding ability as well. You should budget a few extra bucks for the lens hood. The photo below was taken at 300mm at f9.

AFL, I can't say which one is better, but I use the older version of the Tamron, the non di version. Here is a pic I took of my granddaughter last year. I like the lens, it's a great value for the price.

As ropp said the Canon version has IS which helps in low light situations, and the Tamron has the vc or vibration controlled version. At B&H Photo, the Tamron, and the Canon, and right now, through June 18, the canon is fifty dollars more than the Tamron. For me it would be a no brainer. At 649 Canon, and 449, Tamron, the choice would have been easier. If it was me, I would pick the Canon.

The Canon is the best of the three. I have the Sigma and I find it
quite good. It lacks IS which can be a problem for hand held shots
at the long end of the zoom range.

More comments and a few shots taken with the Sigma here:

Yup, Canon now has a $150 rebate on this lens. Should make decision a no-brainer.
