Default Canon 50mm 1.8......

How good is this lens? Is it as good as any USM lens? Thanks for any replies.

It's build kinda cheaply (all plastic... even the lens mount, I believe.)

Optically it's wonderful. Very sharp. I've had no Chromatic aboration or distortions.

It's also very small and light.

Eric

ps. Oh, and CHEAP!

I concur with Eric's findings. For $70 bucks, it's a must have lens!

How does it compare to the Kit Lens at 50mm? I have the kit lens and am thinking of order the 50mm to get the f1.8 for indoor shots.

The main thing for me on the 50mm lens is the max aperture of 1.8! I've been using it in the gyms which are places known for their horrible lighting..

Optically, it is a better lens than the kit lens. Additionally, it's faster by 1.5 to 2 stops. (I forget what the kit lens' aperature range is)
