Default Shooting College Football ('mercan)

I just got my first invitation to shoot a Division I American College Football game with a sideline pass. The game's next Saturday, Air Force vs TCU, in Falcon Stadium at noon in Colorado Springs CO. I decided to rent and try a new lens with my 7D, the Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS. My other lens appropriate for this is the 70-200mm F4 IS. Any suggestions out there?

The pictures I take of the Fighting Illini look good, but all the other teams look terrible.

If you're going to rent, rent a 400mm 2.8. The challenge with NCAA Div I is, even with a sideline pass, you're restricted as to where you can shoot from. You cannot shoot from the player area. You're going to find 300mm can be very short. If you can't or dont want to rent that lens, then a 100-400L is a better choice than the 70-300.

Default Canon 70-300mm F4-5.6L

I went with the Canon 70-300mm F4-5.6L because I was curious about it and also thought that 300mm would be good enough on my 7D's crop sensor. I rented it for four days and used it at a football game, cross country meet, and climbing a 14,440 foot tall mountain in Colorado (Mt Elbert--highest in the state)--and in almost every case in some very clear, harsh, bright Colorado light. I was VERY, VERY impressed with every aspect of this lens and it would be hard to justify buying anything else if l was only shooting outdoors... Here are a couple of representative shots from all three events:
