I find that my Canon 20-200 is quieter and faster than my Tamron 28-75, but I wouldn't quantify the Tamron as being slow or noisy. Side by side, you may or may not notice a difference, but on it's own merit the Tamron is a strong performer. I'm seriously considering the Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 as a wide angle option.

OHenry

My Sigma EX 17-35 f/2.8-4 is 'HSM' which is an ultrasonic design is both fast/silent and has full-time manual AF overide. There's a new revised update with a smaller front filter thread if you're interested:

Thanks NHL. It's about the same price as the Tamron and the specs are similar. Given my personal experience with the Tamron, there's nothing to push me towards the Sigma over the Tamron even with the excellent image you provided. But, it's an option

The main difference is the ultrasonic vs non-ultrasonic... fast/quiet with the full-time AF overide just like Canon's USM lenses by just rotating the lens manual focusing ring.
