Default Close range pictures with the Bigma at 500mm

I took the UV filter off taking these pictures and the IQ is a little better.

Default T3i with tripod solved the problem

I was having problem with the T3i before for having fuzzy pictures when I zoom at 300mm or greater. Well, I am now using a tripod and get good results at 500mm. I can recommend this lens for anyone for doesn't want to spend a lot and yet still get very good picture quality on a long lens. the Bigma is a very good value and I don't have to break my bank to get it.

Here is the latest series of shot with the Bigma with the T3i on a tripod:

NHL has the Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.5 APO DG OS HSM SLD has the half stop advantage over the 150-500mm and is about the same price as the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 USM L lens about $1500-1600. Since the Sigma 150-500mm cost only $1018 and with the money I saved, I bought a refurbished Canon EF-17-40mm f/4L for landscape and event shooting.

I like this lens a lot and it stays on the T3i all the time when I go out photographing birds. With practice, I am finally able to shoot hand held at 500mm without a tripod.

Both Sigma 50-500 and 150-500 are the same at 500mm (i.e. f/6.3)

The advantage they have over the 100-400L is f/6.3 is only a 1/3 stop slower than f5.6!
-> To get to a longer reach (i.e. 500mm) on the 100-400 you'll need a x1.4 which makes it one full-stop slower (f/8), disabling its AF

The faster f/4 on the 50-500 is at the low-end with 50mm, this is more useful in not having to change lens that's all, especially in wet and muddy environment...

Me too - Lot lighter than a 500 or 400 prime!!!

If you shoot BIF like me (on a moving kayak), the higher shutter speeds neutralize any handshake (or boat movements) so a tripod is never needed... Beside it won't fit in the kayak anyway!

I look at the BIF pictures posted by you, smac and Rocky. I realize that I really need a faster camera with better frame rate to get good BIF pictures. Meantime, I just get what I can get out of my slower cameras until the 7D MKII comes out.
