Default Just got an email from B&H

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...m_f_4l_is.html

Difficult choice for the birders:
-> Almost twice the cost of the Nikon (but it does come with a 1.4x)

IMO Canon's pricing on all their telephoto lenses is now ridiculous!
You can get the same thing in Nikon:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...00mm_f_4G.html

... and add a D4 body for almost the same cost as the lens alone. What are they thinking?
May be they are trying to convert their wildlife shooters over to Nikon.

It is not all because of the money or cost. Perhaps, Canon users prefer a white color big lens and are willing to pay doubling the price for it. Beauty over cost?

Here is what is mind boggling: the real market for such a lens isn't the wildlife photog - it's media/journalist companies. It's surprising that Canon is really pumping up the margins on these big lenses above the only competition - Nikon. If you look at the 400mm 2.8 IS II vs. the Nikon VRII - again it's like $2,000 more. When the 1dIII fiasco hit Canon, lots of media jumped over to Nikon. If you assume that the two are back to an even playing field it's a simple matter of cost.

I get what Canon is doing - trying to drive up the margins on the pro grade gear for the big-pocket customers already in the system but I think history has shown companies can and will jump to the competition. And, just like any other business partner decision, price is an extremely important variable.

But, what the heck - they and Nikon are the only 2 making a profit from DSLR so they must have a clue what they're doing!

Unlike Canon the Nikon users had a choice: http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens...d_if/index.htm
-> But not too many people opted for white even at price parity!
