Forgot to mention this. Make sure the camera focusses on the right point. The easiest way to do that is to select the center focus point only. Also, the actual sensor size is bigger than shown in the viewfinder, thus don't try to focus on something really small.

Default Sending the Canon back

Hey Barthold,

I ran those tests and comparisons and the results were consistent with my past tests, disappointing. There were a couple of photos that were terrific and outshined all the others, but most of the time the 24-70L photos were on the soft side.

Then I tried manually focusing the camera and discovered that I, more often than not, could focus the thing better than the autofocus mode. So I called Canon and they recommended that I send it back to have it looked at.

Hopefully, it turns out that I just got a bum lens and they fix it or send me a new one. I would love to post an update raving about my very expensive 24-70 L.

Well, that's some news. At least you now know it is the equipment and not user error!

Did you send them the camera too? Sometimes both the lens and camera need adjusting. Please let us know how it performs once you have it back!

Default 24-70 L repair

Will do.

I don't plan to send the camera. It works well with all my other lenses. Besides, I don't think I can stand to part with it for that long. Good point though.

If they send back the 24-70 L telling me it's fine, then I'll send the camera.

Read this link and then decide if you just want to send the lens:
