Default Canon 70-300 USM III lens and 1.4 Teleconverter

I have a Canon 70-300 USM III lens.

The Ritz Camera Webpage states that "The Canon 1.4x (L) Teleconverter EF is for use on Canon EF 'L' series lenses ONLY. It will NOT work with standard Canon EF non-L lenses. "

Is this true?

Anyone used a Tamron or Sigma 1.4 Teleconverter with this lens?

I need a little more reach than 300 mm but I can not swing $1000 more for an extended telephoto.

I know this is far from a "L" lens but its all I've got.

You are correct... The 1.4x L Series lens attachment is only for L Series Lenses. The rear glass is deeper in the lens then normal and there for requires a different type of attachement. You would not even beable to put the L Series lens adaptor on because it would have this peice that petrudes out and would actually hit your glass on the lens.

There is nothing wrong with Sigma's lenses or say Tamron. But I would recommend if you could find a Canon, get it... Resale value is higher, where I tend to believe you will never been overly impressed with the final results of your photographs, or get tired of losing a few stops... :?

Anywho, get a Sigma if you cant find a Canon.
