Default Sigma 80-400

Is there anyone out there that has this lens? I have been thinking of getting it as my long lens, cause it has IS, and is a couple hundred less than the Canon 100-400 L IS. I have been very happy with my Sigma 24-135, and figured the 80-400 would be good as well. All I would like is some feedback from an owner, if we have one out there!

Frank...
Great shots and thanks for the link. I really like the format of your site where people can vote on the credibility of the photographs. I also notice that this is a German site (if my crude deutch is correct) and was wondering if an English version exists where I could register to the same server?

I notice that you use a Sigma 1.4 apo extender as well, how do you like it?

Again, nice shots and danke!

Hi,
I don't know what you see, but I thought the whole site was in English ?

It's located on our own server which is located in the Netherlands, the extesion is therefore .nl (from Nederland ;D).

The software I have used is coppermine which is VERY easy to install, you just need a Mysql server running and some extra's, but your provider can arrange that.

I tried the 2.0x and 1.4x convertor EX from Sigma, to my shock I expected more of the 2.0 convertor in reach, it just doesn't look like getting the picture 2x closer (on small objects like birds) and because it takes 2 fstops I decided to get the 1.4x convertor. You will loose autofocus on the 80-400 but this is easily fixed with a little tape on the convertor (the tapetrick), the 2.0x also works fine but after reading so much bad reviews about less picture quality and seeing the real difference between the 1.4 and 2.0 I decided to FIRST buy the 1.4x and later in the summer probarbly the 2.0 .

Greetings,
Frank

Thanks for the response Frank. I noted the German because I cut out a little slice of the url in order to find the source of the site. Why I didn't focus on the fact that I was seeing your site in english is beyond me, and I apologize for being so foolish.

Please elaborate on this comment. Why would you even consider the 2x "later" if you received bad reviews? And please explain the "tape trick" if you would be so kind.

Thanks Frank, your post is wonderfully informative!

Hi,

I will buy the 2.0x extender because it's out there I'm afraid and it's not that expensive on the net used ;D.
It will give me and extra reach for sometimes I guess.
But first I have to buy a new bag.......

The tape trick is very easy just put a piece of tape on three pins inside the convertor, here is the picture (from FM forums).

Greetings,
Frank
