Default Sigma vs. Tamron 17-35 Lenses

Anyone have any experience with these two lenses or can point me in the right direction for comparison. I'm considering these two lenses as an alternative to the Canon 17-40L. I could save a couple hundred buying one of these instead of the 17-40L. Or does anyone feel strongly that the 17-40L is well worth the extra cash? I'm trying to be practical, but not cheap. Afterall, I pretty near have $2k invested in this rig already.

I have the Sigma 17-35 EX f/2.8-4 HSM:

They have a better, but older 15-30mm F3.5-4.5 EX DG which is not HSM (ie ultrasonic).

Is it a tamron SP series lense? The SP line is quite good, the non SP are both inexpensive and average.

I guess it is the same as a sigma EX and non EX or canon normal and L series.

NHL: That pic is great. I'm leaning towards this lens, but I see there's 2 different Sigma 17-35, one is "DG" and takes a 77mm filter and the other is what I think you have that takes the 82mm filter. There's quite a difference in price. Is the "DG" worth it? I appreciate any help.

The DG is a newer release, cheaper front filter and shorter minimum distance are some of the improvements, but weight slighly more because of that 1 extra optical element!

Default Are there 2 Sigma lenses...

Is there a Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-40 EX DG AND an EX, or is there just one model - the EX DG?

TIA

There are two EX: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/Html/lenschart.htm

My older 17-35mm f2.8-4 EX Aspherical, and a newer 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX DG Aspherical. Both are ultrasonic HSM...
