Default lens for portraits

i've decided to puurchase a Canon 10d camera body, but am now wanting some advice on which lens to buy. could anyone tell me which i would be better off getting if the main use of the camera was portraits shots. im looking at either the canon 17-40mm f/4L or canon 16-35mm f/2.8L.
i'm setting up a small studio so i do need the wide angle lens

I think both of those lens would be to short for individual portraits... Right now i'm using a 28-75 and i'm finding that it's a little to short... i'm gussing something in the 85 to 100 range would be better...

I agree - you need something a bit longer, even if you have a small studio. If you get too close and use a wide angle, you will make it look like they have a big nose. I have a 28-105 and I usually wind up using it in the 70-105 range for head-and-shoulders shots, a bit less for waist-up or full length. The camera is about 6-8 feet from the subject. If you want a zoom I'd say get the 28-105, maybe the 28-135. If you want a prime, Canon makes 2 great 85's (f1.2L and f1.8 ) and a 100/f2

Your best bet for those portrait shots is the Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 macro. You can't beat the sharpness of this lens, plus the maximum apeture of F/2.8 and the ability to shoot macro.
