I bought the 100-400mm USM IS today.

Check out this webpage: http://www.tomhayes.com/100-400/ for a picture of the size comapred to the Rebel lense.

And if you another sample of the 100-400 in action, look at almost every picture of mine in the wildlife gallery here. I just love that lens.

Do you also find the Lens to be a little soft? I'm between the 100-400mm and the 4.0 300mm L. I know there are pros and cons to both, but I do want something very sharp at max length.

I felt that my 100-400 was so soft at 400mm that I sent it to Canon for calibration, but I think this is "normal" for this lens. You'll get the sharpest pictures from f8-f11, so you'll need good light.
