If you prefer the Nikon brand, the new Nikon 17-55mm F/2.8 DX AF-S G is much more practical and has a better range than the AF-S17-35mm. F/2.8. Price range about the same or may be a little bit less for the new 17-55mm. The only draw back is the new lens is a G DX series ( no aperture ring) and is designed to use with digital SLR and not for film cameras, you still be able to mount it on film camera, shoot pictures, but the result is not favorable (distortion).

Here's my Sigma 17-35mm/2.8-4 EX APO HSM for the 10D (BTW Sigma has a new improved version of this lens with a smaller front filter and closer minimum focus):

The newer version has the filter size of 77mm, and the HSM now works with Nikon cameras, price is about [email protected] Bhphoto, available now...

... and I agree optically, but:

1. It does not have HSM (ultrasonic)

2. No front filter although the lens cap can be used to hold one...

3. While the 17-35 may not rate as high as the 15-30 with the 10D there's a 1.6x crop cutting off the bad peripheral parts... and then it's an f/2.8 at the wide end plus it's an HSM which is faster and quieter in focus than the 15-30!

BTW just out: http://www.tipa.com/awa_detail.lasso...&-KeyValue=113
