Just purchased (Canon 50mm 1.8 II) this used inexpensive lens that everyone raves about. Image quality seems sharp. However, when auto focusing, the focus ring clicks or buzzes. It doesn't seem to affect anything other than being noisy and annoying but the seller did not mention this problem. I assume this is not supposed to happen. I just wanted to check with other owners of this lensbefore I e-mailed the seller.

Thanks for your help.

I don't own this lens, so I am only guessing here.

I do know it doesn't have a ring USM motor in it, and as such, it should be noisier. I think it has a Micromotor, which is a small motor that drives a gearshaft...might be the clicking noise your hearing.

I did a net searchand came up with this small but informative web site onconsumer grade canon lenses. Your lens inmentioned under the older lens.

I own this lens (purchased new), and I can assure you that mine does not click or buzz when autofocusing.

Yup-

I just got mine new a few weeks ago and no noise from the lens. It is a little choppy in manual focus but what the heck it is a cheapy after all.

It might have been happening to the former owner and he/she "forgot" to mention it.

If there truly is no noise, then you have an extraordinary 50/1.8 Mk II. The vast majority of 50/1.8s are described by their owners as noisy when compared to a USM lens such as the 50/1.5. Mine is noisy. Still, I wouldn't dexcribe that noise as a click or a buzz, more like a grind. Doesn't bother me at all.

I've had the 50mm 1.8 II for over 10 years, and its definitely noisy. Its a mechanical sound, like a grinding or whirring. Not too objectionable IMHO. Its one of my best lenses. I love the speed and sharpness.
