I'm looking for a lens suitable for protrait, informal group shots (friends weddings etc) and also everyday general usage. The two that appeal, and these are at the top end of my budget, are the Canon 28-135 IS and the Sigma 28-70 F2.8. I use a Canon Digital Rebel. I like the range on the Canon and the idea of the IS- I don't have the steadiest hands - but like the F2.8 of the Sigma.

I'd be grateful for your comments.

IMO you would need the f/2.8 for the defocus DOF for portrait, but I think the Tamron is better than the Sigma in this category (or the Canon EF 28-135 IS USM which I have as well).

Andy, what about a prime? The Canon 85mm f/1.8 does exceptional portraits as well as having excellent low-light capability. If you're set on the zoom, consider the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. That's received some praise as well.
