I'm looking for an excellent wide angle lens for my Canon 300D. I have a 24-85 L and had such a bad experience dealing with its focus issues and with Canon's servicing center that I don't want to waste any more time and money with Canon's L series.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have never heard of a 24-85L lens??? Canon will introduce a 10-22 in October.

Canon makes a regular 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 USM that is the only 24-85 I know of they make.

As far as Canon's 'L' glass, it is the BEST made!

Whoops, I mis-typed. I meant 24-70 L lens. (I confused it with my 24-85 ultrasonic.) Good catch.

I learned from Canon that the 24-70 L lens needs to be tweaked to the 300D (it works just fine out of the box with everything else.) However, it took me sending it back and forth from the IL servicer several times to the East Coast servicer several times, to find it out (if you search, you will find my positings documenting my difficulties with the lens) and more back and forth to get it fixed. While the lens works much better now, I can categorically say that the lens was not worth the effort, much less the cost of transportations.

I need a wide angle of good to excellent quality but I will not put myself through the ordeal that I went through with the 24-70 L.

Here's a review on the Tokina 17.

That site also has a review on the Sigma 12-24.

Here's a comparison of that Sigma with a couple of others.

Readers who haven't given up on Canon should consider the upcoming 10-22 EF-S and 17-85 EF-S, when the lenses and comparison reviews are available.

In all fairness to the Sigma 12-24, the picture should be cropped to the smaller FOV of the 10-22 EF-S and 17-85 EF-S when doing comparison to the "linked" pictures since theses were done on a full-frame 1Ds...

Also pricing wise the 12-24 is 'workable' in a future full-frame camera whereas one should consider buying a 2nd lens with the EF-S if the next camera is larger than the crop factor...

Thanks for the suggestions. The Tokina looks the most interesting. I might give that a shot (pardon the pun).
