What other lenses are there that are comparable to the Canon 17-40 f4L lens in terms of image quality and price?

You could look at both Tamron and Sigma. They have very similar spec lenses at 17-35 f2.8-4. Both areless expensivethan the Canon lens. The Tamron lens does not offer full-time focussing while the Sigma does.I have seen a very good article in Shutterbug regarding the Tamron lens and many people on this and other sites like the Sigma. I own the 17-40 f4L and am very happy with it, but the Tamron and Sigma are cheaper if finances don't permit the purchase of the Canon lens. Rating the quality of all three is very much a personal thing. You could read 10 comparisons & get very different opinions as to which lens is "the best" or if they are "comperable" lenses. The two lenses listed below, in terms of specs and group of photographers they are intended to appeal to are very similar to the 17-40 f4L. As they say,you make your choice and pay your money.
