I'm considering buying these two new (for me - I have the Tamron 1.4 and the old EF 2x) extenders. I have a bunch of Canon lenses accumulated over the years but when I look up the compatability charts, only one lens of mine is listed - the EF 300 f4L IS. Should I conclude that all my other lenses are compatible?

No, the Canon EF TC's are compatable ONLY with the lenses listed.

Generally the Canon TCs are only compatible with the longer focal length or zoom 'L' lenses. The Canon TC's have a protruding front that will physically not fit into the back of other lenses.

Other brand TCs don't have this problem, I've been told. But I cannot verify that.

Bob

I have the less expensive Tamron 1.4X and it is compatible with my lenses:

Canon 28-135 USM IS (Needs good light to autofocus at 135mm)

Canon 50mm F1.8 II (No problems with extender)

Canon 70-300 USM IS (Have to manual focus beyond the 250MM range)

Thanks for your thoughts, Phil. I have found the Tamron 1.4 to be quite useful and with someCanonlenses it permitsautofocus when the comparable Canon extender does not. I don't recall which they are now since I'm returning to use them after a few years hiatus. Apparently it really isn't worth it to buy the new Canon 1.4, as it doesn't seem to offer any significant marginal advantage over the Tamron. And as far as compatibility is concerned, the new Canon 2x extender seems not to offer any significant margin of excellence over the old one. Strange how upgrading software seems to infect one's view of other things.
