Hi,Im new to DSLR and just got a EOS300D last week.I have the kit lens and im looking for another one.

Can you please suggest wich one of these 2 should i get?

Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 ASPHERICAL MACRO Canon af
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Zoom Macro Super II

I'm mostly looking to take pictures of distant objects like the London City from about 2-3 miles. My buget isnt very big so these are the 2 that i can affrord.

Also the 28-300 is MACRO and the 70-300 is Macro Super II.Which one will actualy do a better micro shot?

I have looked at sigma's website but still cant make my mind.

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/html/lenschart.htm

Just off the subject, when a take a photo at any light souce like the sun on a street lamp post i get a nasty ring. What should i get a hood, a UV filter or a skylight filter?

Regards Nick

hello nick

if i'm not mistaken, the 70-300mm lens is 1:2 at macro, and the 28-300mm is 1:3 (the ratio of the size of the subject compared to it captured on film[errr..sensor )...so the actual image will show a bee half the size with the 70-300, and a third the size with the 28-300...)

i would suggest you go with the 70-300mm, i've heard very good things about it, and i don't think the long range zooms are very high quality...

also, the 70-300mm is 5.6 at 300, and the 28-300mm is 6.3 at 300....

so...basically the 70-300mm, though more limited in range, would be higher quality for you

Just been on Sigmas website again and there are 2 versions of the 70-300
70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Zoom Macro Super II
70-300mm f/4-5.6 Macro Super II
Is the APO one better?

A quote from the website "

Apochromatic (APO) telephoto lenses greatly minimize color aberration, a phenomenon created by different wave lengths of light refracting at different angles. This causes each color to have a slightly different imaging point, resulting in poor image quality. "

Thanks

oh yeah, forgot to mention that

the APO is the one i was talking about

i've heard it's much better, and if i'm not mistaken, it's not much more expensive (30 bucks?)

btw...that quote is talking about chromatic abberation as causing poor image quality, not the APO...lol

the APO minimize it...

Thanks again for the answer i'll try and find it in the UK.I havent seen it anywhere yet.

well here is the link

Thats probably the one i should have quoted

APO lenses. These lenses use apochromatic design and Special Low Dispersion glass (SLD) for minimum color aberration and ultimate telephoto image quality, improving contrast and sharpness.

hmm..i dunno about over there, i heard photo stuff was more expensive in Europe...

in the US i can get the Sigma 70-300mm APO, for $209, so that would be more like 120 pounds? (lol, i could be very far off, but it should be somewhere in between 100 pounds and 150 pounds )

hmm...take a look around the "Which Camera should i buy" forum...look for a thread about hong kong prices..

i remember a thread that a couple people were talking about how they got their photo gear cheaper buying it from a guy in hong kong..

lol, i'll look..
