Canon hasmade that same statement on their websitein the pastregarding the coating on the 17-40 f4L, an EF lens:

I have no doubt the coating technology used by any maker is probably similar across their entire lens line, digital or not. I alsohave no doubt the 17-40L "non-digital"lens I have would equal or surpass any zoomlens you could compare to it at the same focal length on a digital body, be they "digital" lenses or not.
