:? Irecently bought a 100x400 Canon lense, picking it over this one, but, NHL really gave me the what for when I was trying to make up my mind.
I really like the looks of this lense and am trying to justify adding it to my others. I have the 70x200 Canon and of course the 1x4. Any thoughts or suggestions.

:-)The Sigma 120-300 f2.8 with a 1.4 TC makes owning the EF 100-400 f4-f5.6 La bit redundant. Asthis makes a 420mm F4, a stop faster than the 100-400. (or a 600 F5.6 with the 2x TC, still fast enoughfor autofocus)

I thinkyou must use the Sigma TC's, I don't think the Canon one will fit.

Only draw back is its price, quite a bit more than the EF 100-400. (and maybethe weight and filter size).

Peter.

I noticed the title says F.28 instead of F2.8 (which I'm sure is a typo).

When will we see a lens made (so that you could get a Rebel XT and the lens for less than a 1D Mark II or 20D body) so that title would NOT be a typo?

It's an f/2.8 alright...

You have to remember this is a 120-300mm f/2.8 zoom - compare to any other 300mm f/2.8 for prices then it is actually a bargain (ie 1/2 price!)

This lens is also HUGE because an aperture is a ratio of the focal lenght over the lens effective diameter. This is a very fast f/2.8 lens after all and why the f/4 is almost half its size (and more discrete...) -> hence the cost of the glass that went into it. Take it to a photography meet and this lens will create an impact just by its sheer size although it's not made in white! Just like Mr_Saginaw has said: "makes the 70-200 f2.8 look whimpy!" When the lens shade is taken off (105mm filter thread) - one can imagine what some subjects might feel like some critters in front of a macro lens!!! :G  :-)

BTW unlike the other Sigma lenses, the Canon TC's will fit this 120-300

Good to know! I'll be looking into TCs soon...

And yes, this lens does seem to turn a few heads...

Can you imagine how many 120-300mm F2.8 lenses Canon would sell if they copied this lens? It would probably throw their whole marketecture scheme out of whack.

Guess what???

Sigma saw this potential... and why they release not one - but two excellent 100-300 f/4 and 120-300 f/2.8 lenses in this gap in both Canon and Nikon line up
... an other option is a prime, but so impractical in real use unless one sticks strictly to birding
