Ive been looking at a tamron 28-300 lens, does quality suffer because of the wide range of this lens, is it worth buying (secondhand)??? sounds like a great lens, I would use this pretty exclusively if it was good.

Good - is a relative term. It's practical may be because it's an 'all-in-one' lens...

I can't find the MTF for the Tamron, but here's the Sigma 28-300:

-> it's slightly sharper than your Canon 100-300 USM:

... but nowhere near the quality of a good Sigma 100-300 f/4:

Of course prices have a lot to do with it
(and you don't tend to find good lenses used)

I have the Tamron 28-300 XR in the Nikon F mount and use it with my D70. It is a very nice lens for the money in my opinion. It is light and compact (except when set at 300mm ) and would make a very good lens if you could only take one with you. It has excellent macro coverage and really brings distant things close with that 300mm focal length as on most dSLRs it becomes a 480mm telephoto.

For $225 (for the sigma) not a bad deal

Thanks, for replies, I was thinking about the 28-105 or 28-135 as a walkabout lens but if this is of reasonable quality and I can get it at a reasonable price (it's secondhand) I may well get this one instead.

If anyone has some images shot with this lens I'd appreciate a look at them.

You have to be careful there's several versions of this lens:

The 'older' bad one - http://photosig.pcphotoreview.com/mo...3_3128crx.aspx

and the 'newer' & better XR Digital (Steve's)version - http://www.bobatkins.com/photography..._review_3.html
