Default Older Canon lens for wide-angle solution for D 60?

Recently purchased a D 60 w/ the 24-85 mm lens. Very nice, but for my work I also need a wide angle lens. I tested the Sigma 15- 35 and found it too soft even at f8. I'd love to have the EOS 16-35 but don't have the money. Does anyone know about the use of older lens such as the FD 17mm on a D 60? Is it possible and what would work as well as what wouldn't.
