I have been looking at these four lenses:
Sigma Zoom Telephoto 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO ($650)
Sigma Zoom Telephoto 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 APO ($550)
Tokina Zoom Telephoto AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AT-X 840AF ($500)
Tamron Zoom Telephoto AF 200-400mm f/5.6 ($500)

None of them are the fastest things out there, but a little boost of the ISO will help a little . I would pretty much be shooting wildlife shots, and maybe some detailed landscapes.
I would prefer to pay under $600 for the lens, and I don't need super quality:-).

If any of you have used any of these lenses, an give any first hand experence and/or pics, that would be GREAT
Thanks!

A quick look at a lens review sight says that the
Tamron Zoom Telephoto AF 200-400mm f/5.6 ($500)
is slow focusing, only "average" optically (2.6 out of 5), and worse at the long end.

Tokina Zoom Telephoto AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AT-X 840AF ($500)
Says that its also slow focusing and also only average optically 2.6)

Sigma Zoom Telephoto 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 APO ($550)
is good optically (3.02) but also very slow focusing.

Sigma Zoom Telephoto 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO ($650)
much worse optically (2.04) and very slow focusing.

Since you don't want to pay for the Canon 100-400 (which is a good lens, but more than double what you want to pay) you might consider this:

Sigma AF 50-500mm f/4-6.3 APO EX (HSM)
Its optically overage (2.71) and slightly faster focusing but not great.

I know several people who have the 50-500 and its serves them well. I think it costs more than you want, though. I honestly don't know.

I am pretty sure I don't want the Tamron, its too slow (5.6 all the time)
and the sigma 70-500 doesn't have good optics...
I am kinda down to the Sigma 135-400, and the Tokina 80-400.
Both have (from what you stated there) OK optics, but the focus is slow. Is there any tele out there that has a good fast focus for under $500??
I have looked at the Sigma 50-500. . .and I will look at it again. Thanks for the info

Sigma should be coming out with their 50-500mm DG lens real soon. The non-DG goes for in the low $800s. It may drop a little in price when the new one comes out. The DG will probably not be a big improvement and the lens the way it is, is well regarded.
