I was wondering how many of you guys used an "L" lens. I have a 300mm f/4 IS L. And I'm amazed at the difference between it and a normal USM lens.

If you have them which ones do you have.

Hi Matt!

Yes, These IS a Difference!! However, there are Many in the Canon Line Up that are Very Close to the "L" Image Quality thatwould only need a Red Ring on them and could be called an "L"!! Those are My 50 f1.4 and 100 f2.8 Macro, Great Values for their Build and "L" Like Image Qualities!

Goood Luck Choosing!

I have two "normal" lenses (EF-S10-22mm & 28-135 IS) and one 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens.

I can notice the difference in quality when I see the results of the 70-200. It's even good for just holding and looking at

Also which L lens :-), some are sharper than others.

Like the older non-IS "70-200 F2.8" is optically slightly sharper than thenew "70-200 F2.8 IS", but at the quality of output of these lensesit is impossible to tell with the eye which did what.

And the old 100-300 f5.6 L is not very sharp at all.

I have the 24-70L and the 70-200F4/L. These are great lenses and I take them everywhere.

That 70-200F4/L is rated higher optically than either of the F2.8 versions :-)It is one good lens.

I have the 100-400L, the 600mm f4L, 17-40 f4 L.
For the ways I use them, they are great lenses. I also have a few non L lenses and they can also produce good stuff. I just don't use them in more "trying" situations. I purchased the good lenses so I'd use them at the times when I need the higher quality.

Even when the f/2.8 is stopped down to f/4?

I picked up 2 used L lens recently - the 70-200 2.8 (non IS) and the 200 2.8 prime. Both are fast and sharp, sharper than my non L lenses. They are keepers. I bought a new 300 f4L IS this past week, but found the copy to be somewhat soft, and the IS didn't seem to work as well as my 2 non-L IS lenses. So, I returned it.

How is your 300 f4 IS working?

I'm now trying out the Bigma 50-500 on my 20D.

My favorite lens is the 70-200 IS L and only use my 100-400 when photographing boat racing but I don't particularlly like this lens, hate the zoom mechinism and don't think I get as good a photos than the 7-200. Although I am thinking about the 1.4x tele converter!

I'd love a longer prime lens but can't justify the expense, and the 50mm f1.4 is on my wish list!
