It all started with this thread: http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/v...65&forum_id=65

until a fellow member karusel wrote:

And now, please, can someone explain to me why, according to MTF charts, the Canon 200mm 2.8L II prime clearly appears MUCH inferior to Canon or even Sigma @ 200? The only upside I can recognize is more even corner-to-corner picture - yet some people claim the 200 prime being slightly sharper than the zoom...???
... Well here's the rest of the RED rings line up folks:

o EF 85mm f1.2L USM - I have this lens
and one doesn't compare MTF with different aperture, (the blue curves are @ f/8)
but just for kick:

o EF 135mm f2.0L USM:

o EF 200mm f2.8L II USM:

Against the EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM zoom:

@ wide: and long:

So yes we all would like to 'think' that primes should outperform a zoom, but the evidences here point quite to the contrary... -> except for the EF 300mm f2.8L IS USM which is close to perfect - One better checks the MTF of the other primes before assuming they are automatically better!

Yeah, I'd really like some comments on that...

Here are a couple of guys preferring the fix focal: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...ort=7&thecat=2

Couldn't find direct picture comparisons... except one with 70-200 f/4L: http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu/fra...n_ef200usm.htm

No one care to comment - Hello ???? :?:

From the 1st link - IMHO the pictures that I get from my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX (and probably from everyone here too) can be much better than the ones posted - Naturally it could be the scaling from pBase or other hosting sites, but the pictures linked in the thread surely didn't backup the lens...

I can agree with corner-to-corner on the 2nd link, but that is to be expected if the author was shooting with film, and the MTF's curve kind of showed that as well; However, if one was to shoot with an APS sized 'digital' sensor the curves are flat up to 13mmm on that 70-200 f/2.8L too (ie the bad part is cropped by the camera) - and much sharper! :?

:?NHL, I am not really qualified to say how good the 70x200 is, but it is blowing me away. This is the lense I am reaching for more and more. I am using it for closeup, and action as well as low light inside. This lense is working well.
On your advice, I also got the 120x300 Sigma, [thanks for your help] and it will probably be come a go to lense too. I think the 70x200 will always be the 1st try though because of the sheer size of the Sigma. It is big. Did I say it was big.
You guys are going to have to come up with more than that to get me to drop the 70x200, It even works well with a 1.4 tx and not bad with with the 2x.
This lense rocks.
