Wes, you have a shot of a type of bee fly. there are many varieties that mimic bees for protection from predators. here is a link to some other pictures of different bee flies and a picture i got off the web that seems similar to yours.

Thanks for all the comments!

It seems that having a shorter lens 60mm and a longer lens 100mm+ would be a good option. I'll have to incorporate that into my budget. So many options, so little money!
