I just received my Canon 17-85 EFS IS USM lens. This might be a stupid question, but what does the IS sound like when it turns on? My lens makes a kinda clunky-churn sound when I press halfway on the shutter release. I'm assuming it's the IS, but I just want to make sure it's working ok.

My 70-200 IS makes a nice solid 'clunk' when it engages. I used to have a 28-135 IS, and it wasnt as pronounced though. I think it matters how much glass is being moved.

Thanks. That must be what it is, then. Just wanted to be absolutely sure after spending $500 on something.

I have the 17-85IS and it doesn't make a sound... My 75-300IS made that sound though, and my 70-200 2.8IS makes that sound as well...

My 17-85 doesn't make a sound, nor can I feel a vibration when the IS activates. My 70-300 DO makes a barely detectable noise, but I can definitely feel it through my hands when the IS is activated and de-activated.

I should clarify. The sound is very soft, muchquieter thannon-USM/HSM focusing mechanisms and I don't feel any vibration at all. I took it to a local shop and he took another 17-85 and it made the same sound.

G35 - It is absolutely normal. Add the sound to your AI servo mode and you have all kinds of little busy sounds. In fact it is probably your USM motor maintaining focus for you. Either way - quite typical.
