Yeah, actually those look OK to me.

With appropriate sharpening in PS you'll be off and running :-)

BTW, the size of the AF area is also quite critical (it's variable with the focal lenght):

At 17mm the AF point is trying to pick form a small purple line within a 90% area of blank white paper - Similar to shooting a small bird (or a small deer) within a larger area of overlapping foliage -> Guess where the camera AF algorithm is trying to focus on most of the time?
