This lens is the right version of the Sigma. I think you'll be quite happy with it. After trying a friend's, I just ordered one to complement my Canon 17-85 IS USM.

And, here's a link to a bunch of user photos taken with the lens. Just so you see that it can take great shots. It's much more about the person behind the lens than the lens itself.

and I agree 100%

IMO the images over here taken with the same lens are of higher caliber:
