I am thinking about getting the tamron 28-75 2.8 or the sigma 24-70 2.8.

I was wondering if the tamron autofocus is noisy at all. Could i take candid shots of people without them realizing it (and hearing the loud lens)?

i know the sigma is too loud, but is the tamron loud?

thanks!!

Only Canon and Sigma offer 'ultrasonic' lenses at this time - The fast and silent type of drive (with full-time manual overide of the AF)...

The Sigma lenses with the 'ultrasonic' drive are called HSM as opposed to USM in Canon talk (Nikon calls their version AF-S, and Minolta SSM)

ok those lenses are VERY quiet.

i was asking about whether the tamron is quiet enough to snap someone's picture without them noticing.

if you don't want ppl to notice you are taking their picture.. a longer telephoto (70-200ish) with hsm/usm would allow you some extra working distance..

How many decibel are we talking about?

... I would guess with a smaller 'digital' lens with less mass to move which mean less reduction gearing then it would be sligtly quieter - but unless someone measure it, the noise level is quite subjective depending of course on the background depending on whether one is in a cafeteria or in a church.

I have the 28-75 Tamron. And although it is not as quiet as my Sigma HSM lenses, it is not loud by any standards. I have shot deer at close range with this lense and they never knew I was there. I have also shot some pictures at a wedding standing right next to a camcorder and you can not here the lens at all on the DVR recording.
