Looking through multiple test results, the lens looks decent, if not quite in the same league as the Canon 70-200 f2.8.

But I have a chance to buy one new for a reasonable $530, which makes me take a second look.

Any thoughts? The Tokina has some nice stuff in this range as well, slightly cheaper.

the 17-40 is a great lens on a 1.6 crop factor camera.. its quite soft in the corners on full frame or 35mm though..

you might want to also look into the sharp sigma 18-50 f2.8. it's smaller, faster, broader focal range, and costs less. very hard to beat.

or a sigma/tamron 17-35 2.8-4.0..

make sure if you get the sigma to get the DG version as it is completely redesigned lens..

I own the 17-40L, it is awesome. Some people will argue you need a F2.8 wide angle (NHL :-)). For what I do with it F4 is just fine. I've taken some really great shots with it. Here's an example.

How about the Sigma 12-24 EX? This lens is also quite reasonable @ about the same cost as the 17-40 L, but offers a more dramatic result with a much wider view...
