I am about to purchase a Canon 20D. I need help selecting which lens to buy with it. I would to use both wide angle and zoom. For the zoom I mainly would like to takeshots of objects that are about 200-300 metres away & bring them up full frame. Any help greatly appreciated .

whoa... lofty goals there.. you might want to narrow it down a bit.. say a price range, etc..

Bring to full frame a subject 300 meters away? That's about 1000 feet or 330 yards. You're going to need one massive lens; maybe contact NASA? Here is a shot with my 70-200IS joined with a Kenko Pro 300 2xTC at full zoom, so 400mm (640mm effective with 1.6x). And I was only about 50 feet (or roughly 15 meters) away.

Your price range is sorta low.

I have the canon 80-200 F4 lens for medium telephoto and it's pretty nice.

You might want an 80-300 however.

Your going to get a fairly slow lens in that price range that won't do your 20D justice.

You also did not mention what objects you are trying to shoot at 100 meters.
At that distance even a 500mm - 600mm may be shortish for something like a wolf in size.

Lenses in that size are not in the inexpensive range. It cost me around to 3500$cdn to get to a 600mm F5.6 (300mm F2.8 and 2x tc). F5.6 being the minimum apature after which the 20D firmware stops auto focusing.

I'd recommend looking at the Bigma, AKA the Sigma 50-500mm lens, but it is about 4x what you are looking to spend.

Unfortunately the lens you're looking for doesn't exist.

We'd all love a 100-1000mm f2.8 IS L that goes for under $300 and weighs less than 1kg - if you do happen to find one let us know :-)

You can get an ultra-long mirror telephoto for reasonable money - but it doesn't zoom or even have an adjustable aperture:

Something like this:

If you are able to get closer to the subject though you might like to consider the Sigma 70-300 APO
