i had one of these lenses back several years ago.. the problem with this lens is it is very soft, especially towards the 300mm end of it, and just awful when used wide open, where most ppl use it most.. it also suffers from terrible CA.. the IS is nice, but for me, the image quality was just not up to par...

if you are going to be using is mainly between 100-200mm and not wide-open, and are not going to be printing anything over 5x7 or cropping alot, then i am sure it will be fine..

as for alternatives, it would really depend on how much you are willing to spend..

the sigma 70-300 APO Macro Super II is considerably cheaper, but is optically much better...

if you are willing to spend a little more, then the canon 70-200 f4L at 579USD and the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX DG at 750USD are just fabulous lenses that you will want to keep forever...

as NHL alluded to earlier, many people sell these lenses after they get more serious into this hobby and realize the image quality is just not there.. and you will not get your money back, therefore, its really not that great of value...

regard, -dustin
