I have a chance to pick up 1st version of this lens pretty cheap, but I was wondering if its worth it. I have heard great things about the optical and build quality of both versions. I have heard focus is pretty slow, but other than that it sounds like a good lens.
Any thoughts?

Normally I would have chosen the Sigma over this lens because of its newer design (ie bayonette lens hood) and the HSM silent/full time AF overide, but in the Minolta case the Sigma version does not come with ultrasonic so you might as well get the lower $ saving from the Tokina instead

I agree the Sigma would be better, but an extra $400 in my pocket might help smooth over some shortcomings in the Tokina.
Does anyone know the main differences in version 1 and version 2 of this lens? (other than the gold and red ring:-)) I believe the mark2 version is APO. . .

Thanks

Well I don't know the differences, but it's quite an impressive lens:
(as measured against the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro)
