I was looking into buying an EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM on ebay and they are going for about $1200 and I notice a company selling it for $700 from HK. They say it is brand new but also state that the buyer is responsible for customs taxes and duties etc. Can I really get this lense for $700 or is there a catch.

I would only buy from reputable dealers with a Money Back Guarante and a USA warranrty if that is where you live. When you buy Grey which is no big thing e.g. from B&H or Andorma they are your warranty (and you save llike 5 or 10 percent) they both carry USA and Grey. When you buy from a stranger you have I think, with ebay 48 hours to claim the item is defective.

If you search pricegrabber, cnet, nextag, amazon you will find very good prices, no tax and low shipping costs. I did a partial search and the price range was like $1230 to $1700. delivered You have to choose a dealer, even then you can trust although you can use your plastic to protect yourself.

Good Luck

Thanks, It is kind of a red flag with that price difference.
