thinking of getting this lens soon. all's well in most of the reviews i've been reading but just today a friend who owns a canon 24-70L discouraged me from purchasing this because he says it wont last very long. re-sale value could also be an issue. problem is i just cant afford the canon at this time

this will be my first lens, after a month and a half im putting my 350d kit lens to rest. im getting this together with the 50mm 1.8. any comments and recommendations are most welcome.

thanks!

fstopjojo has done a good job here: http://www.pbase.com/fstopjojo/2470shootout

... This lens like all EX in this series are 100% metal casing - If you worry about breaking when you drop it then you can still buy two more for the same price!

my experience with the EX series is they are about as tough of lens as you can come by..

thanks for the reassurance guys! im not trying to compare this to canon's 24-70L, as longas this will last me at least 3 years im perfectly ok with it.

I'm with Hards80 on this, I've yet to break a Sigma EX.

I have broken a Canon L. A EF 100-300 F5.6 L to be specific, fortunately IMHO it was not a very good lens anyway, quite soft and very slow.

PeterP, how long have you had your 24-70? any issues at all? front focusing problems, etc?

I´ve bought this lens about 2 months ago - no problems at all with my 10D. It´s big & heavy, very solid built, optically it´s just fine. In fact, it´s my favourite walk around. In analogue times i´ve had a Sigma 28-300 which served well with the EOS50/50E for a couple of years (it was not as solidly build as the 24-70 is).:-)

I don't have the Sigma 24-70 EX :-) ,
Right now from the Sigma lineup I have the 120-300 F2.8 EX, 70-200 F2.8 EX, 2x and 1.4x TC's and I suspect soon either the 150 or 180 macro.

I have the Tamron 28-75 xr di, and find it to be a very good lens as well.

My current waffle for next summer, is between the Canon 100-400 IS USM L is and the Sigma 80-400 OS EX. In this case, I think the real Canon with USM has a lot more going for it.

Peter.

This lens is built like a Hummer (I didn't use "tank" because I wanted to be original). :G It's simply a marvelous lens. Although I am selling mine (eBay auction ends in 12 hours) and going to the Sigma 18-50 f2.8, it was a super hard decision for me as the lens is simply a cracker. It'll last you just fine.
