I'm debating with buying one over the other. Will use mainly for portrait work. Does anyone feel strongly either way about Canon 70-200 f/4L or the Sigma 70-200 f2.8?

I opted for the Canon 70-200 f/4L because of size and weight. The f/2.8 versions by Canon and Sigma are a lot bigger and heavier. I have been very happy with the focus speed, sharpness and color reproduction of my lens, even with an inexpensive Tamron 1.4X TC.

Both lenses are VERY good. I actually prefer the feel and size of the f2.8s though. IMO speed is the name of the game and having the luxury of f2.8 is alwaysa boon. I'd recommend the f2.8.

You better run while you still can before NHL comes along with a hammer . haha

Sigma: Twice the light!

Canon: Lighter! Because it's twice as slow!

Basically... just pick one... (If it was me, I'd go for sigma)... but both choices are good.

You forgot several others: :-) :G
-> the high resolution AF sensor in the camera is only used with lenses of f/2.8 or larger
-> A shallower DOF (you can always turn an f/2.8 into an f/4 for less DOF, but not vice versa)

BTW why do people keep comparing apples and oranges - an f/2.8 should be compared with an f/2.8 (and not an f/4)!

Thanks all for you input. FYI, I am comparing these two because the Canon F/4 seems to be on sale right now ($590 versus around +$1000 before). But I am debating whether to pay the extra cash for the Sigma f/2.8 (around $800-$900). Ideally I would go for the f/2.8. But the Canon just seems really cheap.

$590 is about right for the 70-200 f4. The $1000 was probably the f2.8 non IS version, although that's a bit low for that lens. I'd say get the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 "DG" lens which is about $750.

http://sigma4less.com/sess/utn;jsess...ery=70-200+2.8

Sigma4less.com is the site you want to get any sigma product from. It's been mentioned here before, and other sites as well. They are a reputable seller.

699.99 for the non DG APO version of the 2.8 70-200mm Sigma, and 739.99 for the new DG (or digital designed) APO 2.8f 70-200mm Sigma lens for canon's.

Both are EXCELLENT deals.

Enjoy.
