I currently have the following lenses for my RebelXT:

Canon EFS 17-85 IS USM
Sigma 70-300 APO DG

I would like to replace the 70-300 with the Sigma 70-200 EX HSM f2.8, that's about $725 shipped if I go with the non-DG version. Any reason not to? I've seen pretty much only good things about this lens. I can handle losing the semi-macro capabilities of the 70-300.

I would like to replace the 17-85 with an f2.8 lens as well. But, I don't want to lose quality (it's a great lens optically and otherwise). I figure I can get around $500 on ebay for the 17-85 and am willing to spend about that or a little more on its possible replacement. There's the Sigma 24-60 and 24-70 and 28-70, which all come in f2.8...but, they seem to get mixed reviews and they don't have HSM AF, which I love on the Canon (USM).

Should I just keep the Canon or is there a lens that is somewhat equivalent for under $600.

Or even go with something like the Sigma 20-40 EXf/2.8, the canon 50 mm f/1.8 II and the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX?

There's plenty of choice at the wide, but my suggestion would be the 17-35 EX f/2.8-4 DG, it's the only one with HSM (ie USM and full-frame too) at this aperture from Sigma:

... and here's at f/2.8:

... or you can always go for the EF16-35 f/2.8 L  :-) :G

Those pics look nice.

Do you own this lens? I know it's not the only place to get opinions, but at fredmiranda, it's got prettycrappy reviews. Do you think it's optically on-par with the EFS17-85?

I own this lens for several years and my lens is not even the DG version, which is much improved
From an MTF stand point a full-frame can't match an EF-s (even the 16-35 f/2.8L @ 3 times the cost can't either)

-> But on the 20D and XT you're only using the best part of the image

The only thing I don't like about the 17-35 that I do like about the 24-60/70 lenses is that they are f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range.

If the HSM wasn't a priority, would you then recommend the 24-60/70 lenses?

My choice would have been between the 24-70 f/2.8 EX or the 18-50 f/2.8 DC if no HSM - I would not consider the 24-60 f/2.8

on a crop camera, i would get the 18-50 2.8.. its sharp as a tack and covers a nice focal range..

I guess for good measure, I should include the Tamron 28-75, which seems to get great reviews.

Any experience with that one?
