High everyone - I'm new here and it seems like a wicked nice board with excellent advice.

I'm purchasing a Canon 20d with a EF-S 18-55mm lens. I've got an addition 1K to spend on a zoom lens. I'm looking for a lens specifically for shooting indoor sports (ice hockey). Any suggesstions?

Thank you very much

Matt

I'd probably go with the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX - about $750.

For Hockey, since you have the added light from the reflection of light from the ice, you could probably go with Canon's 70-200 f/4L. also.

oh man...

if you're going to get the 70-200... i dont think you're going to like the 18-55's cheap feel at all.... after i got the sigma 30, i never used the kit lens since.

might as well save that 100 and spend the rest on something else...

True, if you forego the 18-55, you could get the following setup:

Sigma 18-50 DC 2.8 and Sigma 70-200 2.8 for about $1200 (I have these two lenses)

Sigma 24-70 2.8 and Sigma 70-200 2.8 also for about $1200

well, at sigma4less

70-200 - 730
24-70 f/2.8- 365

--------
1095

OR

70-200 - 730
18-50 f/2.8 - 430

-----
1160

if you really need the wider angle, then you can try the 18-50, but the second combo really goes over the budget line (these calculations are excluding taxes). The other thing to note is that the 24-70 / 18-50 have no HSM (quiet focusing + Full time manual override)... If it was me, I'd try to give more thought into the second lens because i NEED USM/HSM... haha...

after the 70-200 you have about 370.. which is a decent amount... the thing is you should give more thought on your secondary photography requirements. The general suggestions are 1) stick to a zoom and 2)...well, I have don't have a #2...

Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX. Want to spend the left over dough? Possibly a 1.4x TC or maybe even a 2x...both good if you need to do any outdoor shooting. Either the 18-50 f/2.8 EX or the 24-70 f/2.8 are definately better options over the kit lens. If you buy Sigma, buy for sigma4less...they're cheap andgreat!

Yeap - I like my 70-200 f/2.8 EX as well, but if you can can swing it: it's bigger brother is perfect for hockey shots: :-)

NHL, you are a bad person! If I could afford that lens, it would be in my bag right now!
LOL :-)
